Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a faint blue reflection nebula located 2000 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +48 degrees.  It spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a width of 3 light years.

The asymmetric nebula surrounds the 8.3 magnitude multiple bluish source star HD 199714.

Sidney van den Bergh published his vdB catalog of reflection nebulae in 1966. It was later expanded by one for a total of 159. The collection encompassed all reflection nebulosity visible on the Palomar Sky Survey north of -33 degrees latitude.  My Astrobin vdB Collection, which is about 90% complete, is here.

For my friends here on Astrobin who have donated to my Imm Astronomy Scholarship fund over the past year, thank you again.  100% of the donations are awarded to the students, and all of my book proceeds go towards the scholarship.  Here is a update on the 2024 awards issued Monday (June 24).

I was overwhelmed by the response to the scholarship - we had over 100 applicants.  I reviewed all of the applications numerous times.  I wish I could have handed out more scholarships.  The 2024 winners, each receiving $2000 scholarships, are McKayla Procopio (Drexel University)  and Somya Jha (University of Michigan-Ann Arbor).  You can see them and their credentials here.  This week, in addition to the scholarship, I mailed each of them an astrophotography metal print as a lasting memory of their scholarship.

I felt so good about this process that I hope to be able to raise enough money to do it again in 2025.  So far I have raised $1800 for 2025 and have $2200 to go.
